White House and the European Union warn that there will be severe sanctions in the event of an attack. Can we still avoid conflict?
Between Russians and Westerners, the fate of Ukraine and the future of peace in the European Union hangs by a thread. Russia continues to train its troops on Ukraine’s borders. For the United States, an attack is possible at any time and promises heavy penalties if it happens. Germany is sticking to the same positions. “Russia could no longer import basic necessities, industrial products which it badly needs in the West and it could no longer export (…) It would truly be a disaster”specifies Frédéric Encel, professor at Sciences Po Paris.
However, according to an ambassador in Europe, Russia does not care about its sanctions. For Pierre Servent, defense consultant, Russia has “a desire to dominate the near abroad”. Requirements to which NATO refuses to comply. But a broad discussion would be possible “on security issues in Europe”.
