Aboriginal people had high expectations for the Pope’s trip to Canada. It is now up to them to determine whether these expectations have been met following the various speeches delivered by the pope during his “penitential pilgrimage” to Canada.
Notwithstanding the fact that Francis has finally apologized for the sexual assaults committed by Catholic clerics on vulnerable Indigenous youth, some elements remain unclear, including the fact that the pope did not apologize on behalf of the Catholic Church in as an institution, preferring instead to ask forgiveness for the evil committed by “many Christians”.
In my opinion, the words used by the Pope are very important. Francis did not deign to go to the bottom of the facts knowingly, choosing instead to conceal certain essential aspects of the truth with the ulterior motive of protecting the institution of the Catholic Church, which clearly denotes, in my view, a blatant lack of transparency.
Without a doubt, François is an intelligent man. He deliberately chose his words. He knew the ins and outs of this genocide. He made the choice to limit himself to half-truths, and for that he must be blamed. Reconciliation and healing risk being adversely affected in the future. The Catholic Church must be specifically denounced by its spiritual leader, failing which Francis’ forgiveness will remain unfinished.
