The unexpected sequel to the cult sci-fi trilogy rekindles the myth

On the screens Wednesday, December 22, Matrix Resurrections is only signed by Lana Wachowski, her sister Lilly not accompanying her for the first time since 1996 (Bound). Their films after Matrix (Jupiter, the fate of the universe, Cloud Atlas, Speed racer) have not achieved the expected success. So was a fourth needed Matrix ?

Neo is back to Thomas Anderson, designer of a video game that is all the rage, whose action is inspired by the three films Matrix. Neo is now part of the matrix, the virtual reality in which machines maintain humanity. Morpheus, who extirpated it from him in the past, returns to Neo to revive his memory. Thomas Anderson will find Trinity, who accompanied him in his fight against the machines, but she is now also integrated into the matrix. Will they manage to cross the mirror again into a universe that has taken on a new face and a new dimension?

Heroes are immortal, and since Christ the resurrection is a leitmotif that has proven itself in fiction. James Bond has lived more than twice, Ripley has been cloned into Alien 3 and Superman is resurrected in Justice league. Neo is he not a Christ hero? He had brought Trinity back to life by kissing her in Reloaded, as Jesus resurrected Lazard, and Prince Charming Snow White. And if there is an “s” in Resurrections, title of this fourth part, it is that Trinity and Neo will relive their initiation in a virtual world which they had conquered, but of which the computers took again the control. These resurrections are that of the return to consciousness of the two heroes who were in the grip of the Matrix.

Lana Wachowski got the machine going quite well. It renews a more refined look, deepens the feelings between Neo and Trinity, and the choice to be made between the “blue pill or the red pill” which determines whether or not to remain in the illusion. The notion of “déjà vu” introduced in the second part of the saga, is also deepened. She crosses the initiative to continue the same ‘adventure (already seen) in this fourth film, while renewing it. The film also uses a number of images from previous opus that Neo and Trinity say they have seen.

It is through this integration of the trilogy in Resurrections (films in films) that this final part achieves its ends: to make the public believe that it could also be in the matrix. In the film he is watching, the previous opus are evoked by characters who are themselves part of this virtual world. We, spectators, would we not also be part of it? This nested effect between different levels of reality reconnects with the 1999 original: a success. The image is also sumptuous, but the action scenes abound on the 2h28 of the film with a little taste of warmed up. Matrix Resurrections will divide, but why not a 5th opus by Lilly Wachowski and a 6th co-signed with Lana? Given the crisis of screenwriters in Hollywood (no less than five on this pension), it would not be surprising to see the emergence of sequels in the coming years.
