The unemployment rate stood at 5.2% in Canada last month, down 0.1% according to Statistics Canada on Friday.
The federal agency adds that in Quebec, the rate was measured at a historic low of 3.9%, down 0.2.
Employment was little changed in April in Canada after posting two consecutive months of growth. It fell by 27,000, or 0.6% in Quebec.
Employment gains in professional, scientific and technical services and public administration were offset by declines in construction and retail trade.
Statistics Canada found that the unemployment rate for people aged 25 to 54 fell 0.2 last month to 4.3%. It was the lowest rate recorded since comparable data began to be released in 1976.
In the Maritimes, the unemployment rate fell in New Brunswick by 0.7% in April, to 7%, and by 0.5% in Nova Scotia, to 6%. The rate remained stable from March to April in Prince Edward Island, at 8.1%.
