The garden centers of France and Belgium are specialists in important promotions on flowers when spring is on its way. But behind these plants at bargain prices, sometimes hide plants in poor health.

With spring, ever more attractive promotions are springing up in garden centres: a flower pot at 45 cents, a hydrangea at 20 euros. In Lyon, the boss of one of them admits that many of these operations are in fact destocking. “We can have batches of very good quality that we negotiate, because the producer needs space, wants to please us and we end up with attractive prices”, explains the latter. Another trick, sell complaints whose season has passed.

Already sick plants?

But when it comes to promotions, the pros are the Belgian garden centres. Near the border, almost half of their customers are French. “In France, we almost double the price for the same type of plants”, says a buyer. Here, the VAT is lower than that of France (6% against 10%), but above all, the volumes are such that garden centers can afford to lower their prices. But these cut-price dishes aren’t always healthy. To maximize their chances of survival, they must be repotted as much as possible.
