To resist the Russian army, the Ukrainian soldiers are digging tunnels to protect themselves against drone attacks. The battle promises to be long and deadly.
Faced with Russian forces who are carrying out numerous assaults, Volodymyr Zelensky’s army has adapted its combat tactics. The Ukrainian military dug tunnels near Russian positions to camouflage themselves and avoid the numerous deadly drone attacks. “We have 15-20 minutes to get there before the drones arrive”warns a Ukrainian soldier.
“Many old soldiers”
These tunnels are used in particular to launch assaults closer to Russian positions and to resupply Ukrainian soldiers on the front with ammunition. A stressful daily life. “The stress factor increases heart problems. We have a lot of elderly soldiers participating in this war”, explains a Ukrainian doctor. After two years of war, the conditions in which these soldiers live worry the Ukrainian government in the perspective of a return to civilian life.
