Money to deal with the most urgent matters. On Thursday, September 14, the United Nations launched an initial appeal for more than $71 million to provide immediate assistance to some 250,000 people. most affected by the deadly floods in Libya. The UN Office for Humanitarian Coordination (Ocha) estimates that 884,000 people are in need. “This appeal may be updated as soon as additional information becomes available”specifies the UN agency in charge of responding to humanitarian emergencies.
On Wednesday, the head of Ocha had already released ten million dollars from an emergency fund for victims in Libya. “We are all mobilized to provide as much help and support as possible to peopleunderlined Martin Griffiths. The UN is on the ground and we are deploying a strong team to support and fund the international response, in coordination with first responders and the Libyan authorities.”
Access to the disaster area still very difficult
In addition to the UN, the United States, the European Union and many countries in the Middle East and North Africa have promised to send aid. Foreign rescue teams are already at work looking for possible survivors or victims.
Access to the disaster area remains very difficult after the destruction of roads and bridges in the Derna region. Power and telephone lines also remain cut in large areas. At least 30,000 people are homeless in the east of the country.
