The UCI follows the instructions of the International Olympic Committee. The International Cycling Union announced Tuesday, March 1 in a press release its measures in response to the situation in Ukraine. Among the eight points announced, at the top of the list is the suspension of Russian and Belarusian national teams and selections from all events on the international calendar.

In total, six teams (three Russians, three Belarusians) were stripped of their UCI status. This concerns in particular Gazprom-Rusvelo, spearhead of Russian cycling, recent winner on the UAE Tour.

“The UCI wishes a return to peace as soon as possible (…) Sport in general and cycling in particular are indeed vectors of peace, friendship, solidarity and tolerance.”she announced after an extraordinary session.

All calendar events scheduled in both countries will also be cancelled, such as the Moscow Grand Prix or the Five Rings. The national championships can no longer be held, as can the appearance ofemblems, names, acronyms, flags and anthems” related to both countries.
