Madagascar: the turtles of Nosy Be preserved by associations
(France 2)
In the middle of the Nosy Be archipelago, in the Mozambique Channel, the island of Nosy Iranja is home to turtles. This endangered species is protected by associations.
Off the coast of Madagascar is the Nosy Be archipelago, islands located in the Mozambique Channel. Tanguy Guillemain d’Echon, co-founder of Baleines Rand’eau, has been organizing sea trips for 13 years among spinner dolphins, a species which is not threatened. The team respects strict rules so as not to disturb marine fauna.
The dolphins move away as they approach Nosy Iranja, one of the most beautiful sites in the archipelago, which is recognizable by the long banks of white sand, which are revealed at low tide.
Three out of 1,000 turtles reach adulthood
The place is nicknamed Turtle Island. Each nest can have up to 150 eggs, but few babies survive. “We are talking about 3 out of 1,000 who manage to reach adulthood“, explains Tanguy Guillemain d’Echon. Adult turtles can be seen underwater. The green turtle can reach up to 1.50 meters and weigh up to 300 kg. To protect this endangered species, a association focuses on the education of children.
