A veritable human tide of supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, dressed in yellow and green, stormed and ransacked the country’s main places of power in Brasília on January 8. Impressive images that remind us of the invasion of the Capitol in Washington by supporters of former President Donald Trump in January 2021.
For his part, the newly elected President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, sharply condemned the invasion of places of power in Brasília by “fascist vandals” and decreed a “federal intervention” on the forces of order to take control of the security of the capital. “We will find them all and they will all be punished […]. Democracy guarantees freedom of expression, but it also requires that institutions be respected,” he said. “What these vandals, these fanatical fascists, did is unprecedented in the history of our country. Those who financed these demonstrations will pay for these irresponsible and undemocratic acts,” insisted the Head of State.
Obviously, the extreme right movement is spreading at a worrying speed all over the world. The columns of the temple of democracy are seriously shaken. The Trumpists are growing to the rhythm of the mood swings of the heated protesters who are rebelling against the defeats of their candidate.
It’s hard to predict how far this protest trend will go… However, one fact stands out: the movement seems to be firmly under way, and only military repression can stop it… at least temporarily!
