The true from the false. Did Macron wear a watch “at 80,000 euros” and a suit at 4,800 euros” during his interview at 1 p.m.?

Several Internet users suspect Emmanuel Macron of having removed his watch at “80,000 euros” during the interview at 1 p.m. Wednesday, to hide it when talking about the minimum wage and the RSA. It is not so

It’s a scene that caused a lot of reaction on social networks: Wednesday, March 22, during his interview in Emmanuel Macron’s 1 p.m. newspaper, the president passes his hands under the table to discreetly remove his watch. Like many internet users, Clémence Guetté, deputy La France insoumise, sees it as a calculation: “When talking about the “smicards”, who have never gained so much purchasing power”, he discreetly removes his pretty luxury watch, under the table”.

another internet user thinks he recognizes an FP Journe on his wrist, a watch costing more than 80,000 euros. Information widely shared on Twitter and TikTok.

The sound of the watch hitting the table

According to the president’s entourage, he takes off his watch because it makes noise when tapping on the table, as can be seen in the video of the interview (at 11 minutes). He takes it off right after it hits the table.

A watch at around 2,400 euros, not 80,000

Emmanuel Macron is not wearing an FP Journe but a watch from a French brand, Bell&Ross, more precisely, the BRV 1-92 model, with the blue dial and the black strap. It costs 2,400 euros on the market. 2,400 euros is expensive, but it is 40 times less than the price circulating on social networks.

Bell&Ross collaborates regularly with institutions. Emmanuel Macron has been wearing this watch for a year and a half. He wore it during the World Cup final in Qatar as many photos show. We also see it several times on the Instagram account of the official photographer of the Elysée Soazig de la Moissonnière.

A joke taken to the first degree on his costume

Other Internet users also criticize the president for wearing a Hermès suit worth more than three minimum wages while he is talking about the RSA. More precisely the “Tokyo” model which would be worth nearly 5,000 euros. A model that does not exist in the Hermès collections. This false claim comes from an account which only uses second degree. But the joke was taken seriously and relayed in the first degree on Twitter, as can be seen in the post below:

In fact Emmanuel Macron wears Jonas & Cie, a Parisian brand. His usual tailor tells franceinfo that he dresses in half-measures, that is to say that the model already exists but the customer can request alterations. The half-measure at Jonas is 450 euros for the jacket and pants set.
