The Emmy Awards audience rebounded significantly, with 54% more viewers than the historic low reached during their previous edition, the American network ABC announced on Monday, September 16.

Around 6.87 million viewers watched the series’ triumph on Sunday, September 15. Shogunwho broke a record by winning 18 trophies at the American television equivalent of the Oscars.

The epic about 17th-century Japan made history as the first non-English-language series to win best drama series, the night’s top award. The improved ratings are a relief for the Emmys, which have been struggling for years with growing disinterest among viewers.

ABC’s 76th Emmy Awards broadcast has the ceremony’s highest overall audience in three years“, the American channel was pleased. Actors Eugene and Dan Levy, who presented the evening, were rather praised by critics for their flawless performance, marked by their father-son dynamic and their jokes about the gap between generations.

But the Emmy Awards are still struggling. Until 2018, the ceremony regularly attracted more than 10 million viewers. The pandemic, which forced the organization to develop a ceremony where stars were confined to their homes to receive their awards, caused viewership to plummet. Since then, the Emmys have struggled to recover.

The strikes by actors and writers, which paralyzed Hollywood last year, caused the postponement of the 2023 edition to last January. Parachuted into the middle of the awards season, just after the Golden Globes, the 75th ceremony was watched by only 4.46 million people, a historic low.

Far from their golden age, all the major American awards ceremonies are faced with a certain disinterest from the general public, particularly among the younger generation, who spend more time on social networks or on platforms streaming than in front of the television.

But in the post-pandemic world, the Oscars and Golden Globes have seen their audience numbers rebound somewhat, while the Emmys have not. In addition to the triumph of Shogunthe ceremony on Sunday, September 15th had a little surprise in store: the HBO series Hacks won the award for best comedy, beating the overwhelming favorite The Bear. On the mini-series side, it’s the Netflix phenomenon My little reindeer who won.
