The trials of 2024 | The Press

Femicides, sexual assaults, kidnapping: 2024 will once again be a busy year in Quebec courthouses, as long-awaited trials will finally take place. Judicial delays and the Jordan rulings will also receive attention.

Marc-André Grenon

Guylaine Potvin, a 19-year-old student from Jonquière, in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, was sexually assaulted and then murdered in her apartment in April 2000. A murder that remained unsolved for two decades. The trial of Marc-André Grenon, accused of first degree murder, is scheduled to begin before a jury in mid-January. A highly anticipated trial which will help lift the veil on the new investigation techniques used by the police.

Denis Leblanc

The double murder of sisters Diane Leblanc and Sylvie Leblanc in October 2020 was virtually forgotten during the pandemic. This bloody family affair will, however, return to the news in January with the opening of the jury trial of Denis Leblanc, accused of having murdered his two sisters. He is also accused of three attempted murders during an exchange of gunfire with police in the streets of Montreal.

Pierre Ny St-Amand

The case has had a profound impact on Quebec in 2023. The bus driver accused of killing two toddlers and injuring several children by crashing into a Laval daycare will have his preliminary investigation next March at the Laval courthouse . Ten witnesses will be heard. For the first time, we will be able to learn more about the circumstances of the attack and the mental state of the accused at the time of the events.

Peter Nygard

The trial of fashion mogul Peter Nygard next June at the Montreal courthouse should have a national impact. The 82-year-old fallen billionaire is accused of sexually assaulting a woman between 1997 and 1998 in Montreal. Very little is known about the facts alleged in this case. At the end of a highly publicized trial, Peter Nygard was found guilty last fall in Toronto of having sexually assaulted several women.

Robert Luu, Daniel Lacasse and Charles-Xavier Boislard

Three basketball coaches from Saint-Laurent school in Montreal must be tried in the summer and fall of 2024 for sex crimes committed against minors. The three men will have separate trials. The affair caused a stir in 2022. The Press had revealed a “super harmful” climate within the women’s basketball program at this high school.

Ali Ngarukiye

After a three-month trial in 2023 for attempted murder of a police officer, where a jury found him guilty, Ali Ngarukiye will likely have his trial for the murder of a fellow inmate in 2024. The young man is accused of murder André Lapierre in a prison cell. Ali Ngarukiye’s mental health could be at the heart of the trial.

Brothers Rayan* and Karim*

The two brothers from west Montreal accused of having kidnapped their 16-year-old sister in 2021 in the context of an AMBER alert will finally be judged in May 2024. The two men accused their sister of wearing tight clothes and vaping. They are nicknamed Rayan and Karim to protect the identity of their minor sister. The evidence, however, promises to be delicate for the Crown, since the young complainant is now coming to the defense of her brothers.
