The trial of Valentin Marcone opens on Wednesday January 24 at the Assize Court of Nîmes. On May 11, 2021, this thirty-year-old employee of a sawmill in the heart of the Cévennes shot dead his boss and then a colleague.

One day in May 2021, in the heart of the Cévennes, the unthinkable happened. It’s 8 o’clock in a small sawmill. Valentin Marcone has just started duty. In front of his young colleague, he kills his boss and another employee. The sawmill boss and his employee die instantly. The shooter returns home and immediately confesses the murders to his wife, before fleeing into the woods heavily armed. For four days, the village will live to the rhythm of police patrols and helicopter flyovers. Valentin Marcone becomes the most wanted man in the country.

Paranoia diagnosed

After hiding in a boar’s hole, Valentin Marcone finally surrenders. On the eve of the trial, his father is still by his side. His only hobby was shooting sports, which gave him the right to carry a weapon. At the sawmill, he came armed several weeks before the tragedy. The expert psychiatrist diagnoses a form of paranoia which has altered his behavior.
