In Libya, the town of Derna was ravaged by water on the night of September 10 to 11. Thursday, 20 Heures deciphers satellite images.
On a satellite photo of Derna (Libya)we visualize how the mud submerged the town of 100,000 inhabitants. If we zoom in, a large trace of brown slime appears in the image. Derna was the capital of eastern Libya, founded by the Ottomans. In the city center, the football stadium was perfectly designed. It was wiped off the map by the storm and floods. Waters rushed down from the top of the mountain onto the city.
One of the biggest disasters
Until the storm, a dam had held. It gave way and the water came like a tidal wave on the inhabitants of Derna. Previously, the city had several bridges, including one on the seaside submerged by water. Thursday, September 14, there are only two roads left to enter the city. Entire neighborhoods were erased by one of the greatest disasters the country has ever known.
