Russian tanks enter Avdiivka. Phones in hand to immortalize the moment, soldiers parade in the eastern Ukrainian city. There were more than 34,000 inhabitants in this commune before the start of the war. Today, there is almost nothing left. Not a building seems to have been spared. “Southwest of Avdiivka is completely under the control of our brigade. The cleansing is almost complete. There are only a few enemy pockets remaining”says Hermes, commander of the first brigade “Slavyansk” of the Russian army.
Colossal human losses
Avdiivka has become a symbol, like Mariupol or Bakhmut with her. The Russian army has used all its forces to take the city in recent weeks, at the cost of colossal human losses. The situation had become untenable for Ukrainian soldiers. Some were notably holed up in a huge coal processing factory.
