The Iron Lady will no longer flicker at midnight. The town hall of Paris must announce, Tuesday, during the presentation of its energy sobriety plan, a reduction in the night lighting of the Eiffel Tower, according to the entourage of Anne Hidalgo, confirming information from the JDD, Saturday September 10.

Currently illuminated until 1 a.m., the Eiffel Tower will now be turned off at 11:45 p.m., the departure time of the last visitor. It will continue to sparkle at the start of each hour, for five minutes, as soon as night falls, without going beyond 11:05 p.m.

Night illumination represents 4% of the monument’s annual consumption, according to the Société d’exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE). “It is an eminently symbolic gesture to participate in the awareness of the energy sobriety that we must demonstrate”declared Jean-François Martins, the president of SETE, emphasizing that this was part of the “role” of this world famous monument.
