The environmentalist town hall of Lyon has announced that it wants to increase paternity leave to 10 weeks for its agents, a measure presented as a “first for a local authority”Friday November 24. “The first days of life are decisive in the balance of a family”, underlined on X (ex-Twitter) the mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet. Thanks to this measure, “both parents benefit from the same amount of time to welcome their child”he added.

This leave, which will be submitted to the municipal council on December 21 and should be adopted without difficulty, aims to improve the distribution of tasks within couples at the birth of the child in order to advance gender equality, explained the city of Lyon in a press release.

Menstrual leave and leave in the event of an abortion

Nationally, maternity leave is 16 weeks, including four to six weeks before the term. Paternity or “second parent” leave was increased to 28 days in July 2021, compared to 14 previously, with the aim of involving fathers more in the care of the newborn.

Only 65% ​​of fathers took all the paternity leave to which they were entitled under the new regime in 2021, according to a study by the General Directorate of Administration and Civil Service.
