the Tours Volley Ball in the European Cup, a story that has lasted twenty years

March 27, 2005, the Tours Volley Ball between in the history of French and European volleyball. That evening, on the night of Salonika, in Greece, the Tours club won in a room won over to the cause of Iraklis Salonika, in front of more than 8,000 spectators (21-25, 31-29, 25-17 , 25-23). Pascal Foussard, the general manager of the club, was already there. Sixteen years later, he would win the Olympic title as manager of the France team.

Leafed through the Tours Volley Ball guestbook in the European Cup, we see 19 participations in the last 22 seasons, since the 2000-2001 season. He argued 116 Champions League matches, won the title in 2005, finalist in 2007, 3rd in 2004. It was indeed in the European Cup that the TVB flourished from the start of the 2000s. In the first decade, Tours dominated the championship of France. Suffice to say that for a while, France was too small for the Touraine club.

2017, last TVB European trophy

How to compete with Russian, Italian and Polish clubs after the 2010s? The equation was posed to all TVB leaders who had to arbitrate budgets over the seasons. Very quickly, the TVB had to resolve to no longer be familiar with the summits of the Champions League. Often beaten in the group stage of the flagship European volleyball competition, Tours Volley Ball was transferred to the second European Cup, the CEV, in which it was able to flourish this time, with two quarter-finals in 2010 and 2013, and especially a victory in 2017.

Non-existent in the first leg (3-0 defeat), Tours upset all predictions by winning the golden set (31-29, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13) against Trento on April 15, 2017 at the Salle Grenon. Tours then offers itself a second European trophy, to garnish an already full showcase, with a Champions League, eight French championship titles, ten French cups and four Supercups.

Almost 150 European Cup matches

The experience. This is the watchword of Tours Volley Ball when it travels through European venues. Since the 2000-2001 season, Tours has played 147 European Cup matches, including 119 from the Champions League. He won 90 games for 57 defeats. The players come and go, the coaches change, the presidents too, but the spirit remains, with a guarantor, Pascal Foussard. He has been victorious in all campaigns and even more since as manager of the France team (since 2013), he saw the Blues win the Olympic title in 2021.

Never two without three ? The TVB has the opportunity in this 2021-2022 season to add a European trophy to your list, on a two-way duel against the Italian team from Monza (March 16 and 23). However, the season on the continental scene is already successful with eight successes for two defeats (before the final), while the TVB had not passed the group stage of the Champions League and the round of 16 of the CEV since his victory in 2017.
