The too mild winter prevents the opening of the Rideau Canal Skateway

” See you next year. »

It is in these terms, accompanied by a sad emoji, that the administrators of the Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa announced on Friday that they were going to the obvious.

“We won’t be able to open the Rideau Canal Skateway this winter. Despite our best efforts, the weather got the better of us for the first time in our history,” the National Capital Commission announced on Friday.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is the largest natural skating rink in the world. It crosses the center of Ottawa over a length of 7.8 kilometres.

“Despite the best efforts of our teams and even with the cold temperatures of the past 24 hours, the latest tests carried out on the ice show that the Rideau Canal Skateway remains unsafe for skating,” reads the press release.

In recent years, the National Capital Commission has partnered with specialists from Carleton University to collect data on the rink and look for solutions so that it can survive our often too mild winters.
