For a week, the city of Zaporijia (Ukraine) has been living in psychosis, to the rhythm of evacuation exercises in the event of a nuclear accident. These general rehearsals aim to get tens of thousands of people to leave as quickly as possible. “We are all afraid. We cannot even imagine that a nuclear accident could take place”, testifies a woman, Wednesday, July 5. Tension has risen to a crescendo in recent days around the Zaporijia nuclear power plant, located about fifty kilometers from the city.
The plant has been occupied by the Russian army for more than a year
On Tuesday July 4, Volodymyr Zelensky himself raised the possibility of an imminent Russian attack. “Our intelligence services inform us that the Russian military has installed on the roof of several reactors of the power plant objects similar to explosives”, said the Ukrainian president. The plant has been occupied by Kremlin forces since March 2022. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which has personnel on site, claims not to have detected any traces of explosives.
