The third way, endangered?

The arrival of Denis Coderre in provincial politics certainly gives us a taste of what the next Quebec electoral campaign could be like. Mr. Coderre is no fool, his main hobby horse will be the fight against the independence of Quebec. The role of captain Canada suits him perfectly, especially if we compare him to François Legault, who seems not to know where to place himself in this debate.

[…] By making this issue the main subject of his campaign for leadership of the PLQ, he greatly contributes to bringing the federalist-sovereignist axis back to the center of the debates. Whether we are for or against the independence of Quebec, this question has a gravitational force of a magnitude that no other can have.

And François Legault in all this? The fallen sovereignist finds himself stuck between the two options. He who praised the third way of autonomy for Quebec within Canada finds himself with a very difficult record to defend. All his standoffs with Ottawa, without exception, ended in embarrassing failures. […] How can he still defend this option when it has shown no results during his 8 years in power?

If Denis Coderre wins the race, becomes leader of the PLQ and the national question really comes back on everyone’s lips in 2026, it will be very amusing to see the Legault, Drainville, Roberge and Jolin-Barrette of this world defend federalism canadian. Yes, the election is two and a half years away and that’s an eternity in politics. But an eternity quickly passed in politics…
