Air conditioning in businesses and shops must now be set to 26°C, maximum. The government calls on their responsibility to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
In a company in Lyon (Rhône), the air conditioning system is blocked at 26°C. Some employees, close to the bay windows, have equipped themselves with fans. “It’s more for the aeration effect“, assures one of them. 26°C has been the law since 2007. The government decided to enforce it. Stake on sobriety, the solution proved its worth last winter. Our gas and electricity consumption has fallen by 12%.

However, limiting air conditioning in businesses and shops is not unanimous. A Parisian optician fears for his turnover. “From the moment it is hot in a store, people do not feel well and do not stay”explains Jacques Chouraqui. However, the customers surveyed say they are ready. “I am totally in favour. There is an urgency to act“, says a passerby. From now on, sobriety is no longer reserved for periods of crisis, but is a long-term one.
