The Taliban authorities in Afghanistan announced on Saturday (December 18th) the resumption of the issuance of passports in Kabul, making it possible for many Afghans to be able to leave their country soon.

“Passport issuance will start tomorrow in three regions, including Kabul”the head of the Afghan passport service told reporters, adding that the documents would initially be issued to those who have already applied. New requests will be accepted from January 10.

Closed since the Taliban took power in mid-August, the service reopened briefly in October but the influx of requests had caused technical problems, forcing the Taliban to halt deliveries after a few days.

This resumption of the issuance of passports constitutes a test of the goodwill of the Taliban, committed to the international community to let their compatriots leave who so wish and have valid visas.

Thousands of Afghans seek to escape the economic crisis which threatens to turn into a major humanitarian crisis against the backdrop of a halt in international aid since the Taliban came to power.
