A year after his Palme d’or, Ruben Östlund achieved another form of consecration. The Swedish director, rewarded in 2022 on the Croisette for his satirical film Without Filter, has been appointed president of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the organizers announced on Tuesday 28 February. At 48, the filmmaker is preparing to succeed Vincent Lindon, during this edition which will take place from May 16 to 27.
Ruben Östlund rose to international stardom in 2014 with Snow Therapya film that breaks down the modern family with a father fleeing an avalanche, his mobile phone in his hand, leaving his children in danger. This tragicomedy won the director the jury prize in the Un Certain regard category at Cannes.
Two Palmes to his name
In 2017, the Swede made the public at the Palais des Festivals shout with joy by winning the Palme d’Or for The Square. The film told the story of the director of a museum of contemporary art who is preparing an exhibition on tolerance but comes up against his own limits in this area.
Five years later, Ruben Östlund returned to the Croisette with Without Filter, a critique of capitalism devoted to the super-rich and the world of luxury. Once again crowned, he then joined the closed circle of eight filmmakers who won two Palmes d’Or.
