It’s the end of a long, anxious morning in the small university town of Ede in the Netherlands. The man was arrested late in the morning on Saturday March 30 and all the hostages were released. He had several knives on him.
The entire station area had been cordoned off since early morning this Saturday, March 30. As a precaution, 150 houses were evacuated. At dawn, a masked man took several people hostage in a café-nightclub. The man does not have a terrorist profile, but he claims to have a bag of bombs with him. “We know that he was in possession of several knives and that he showed them to the victims. He was also in possession of a backpack, we are investigating to find out what it contained”announced prosecutor Marthyne Kunst in the afternoon.
The hostages in shock
Around ten firefighters were mobilized, while an armored vehicle and a mine-clearing robot were placed in front of the establishment. At 11 a.m., three young hostages, apparently employees of the establishment, were released and came out with their hands on their heads. Shocked, they burst into tears, surrounded by the police. A fourth hostage was released just before the suspect’s arrest.
