This is the end of more than 24 hours of research for New York law enforcement. The man who is suspected of having opened fire on Tuesday morning (mid-afternoon French time) in the subway of New York (United States), was arrested and placed in police custody, announced the New York police at a press conference, Wednesday, April 13. This is the individual who had been wanted since the day before, a 62-year-old American.

The authorities also announced that he will be prosecuted for “terrorist attacks and other violence against (…) public transport”, announced at a press conference, a little later on Wednesday, the federal prosecutor Breon Peace. And to add: “He will appear in federal court in Brooklyn and, if convicted, will face a life sentence.”

The toll of this attack at the 36th Street station in Brooklyn is 23 injured, including ten by bullets (the other thirteen victims were injured in the stampede that followed). “We were really lucky that it wasn’t much more serious”, said the New York police chief.

The suspect fired 33 rounds. At the scene, investigators found “a 9mm Glock handgun, three ammunition magazines, a hatchet, untriggered explosive devices, liquid believed to be gasoline”specifies the New York Times (in English). A vehicle key was also found, allowing investigators to trace the trail of a van from the American rental company U-Haul, recently rented and abandoned in Brooklyn.
