The Supreme Court rules on the case of Alexandre Bissonnette

The Supreme Court of Canada will deliver its decision at 9:45 a.m. this morning in the case of Alexandre Bissonnette, the author of the attack on the Grand Mosque of Quebec. The highest court in the country was to consider the constitutionality of a section of the Criminal Code allowing multiple sentences of 25 years to be served consecutively.

Alexandre Bissonnette, who killed six people on January 29, 2017, could in theory receive 150 years in prison. At first instance, the judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison. The Court of Appeal reduced the minimum time he will have to spend behind bars to 25 years and invalidated section 745.51 of the Criminal Code, which allows the cumulation.

Further details will follow.
