The French shipowner CMA CGM recorded, in 2022, a net profit of more than 23 billion euros, much more than TotalEnergies. The company has benefited from an increase in maritime traffic with the pandemic.
Never had such a high profit, 23 billion 500 million euros in 2022, been made by a French company. With its profits, the shipowner CMA CGM, not listed on the CAC 40, exceeds TotalEnergies, but also Stellantis and luxury companies. The company benefited from an increase in maritime traffic with the confinements, the demand for containers and their prices therefore soared.
Only 2% of taxes paid in France in 2021
CMA CGM, on the brink of financial abyss ten years ago, today has the means to invest in the port of Los Angeles (United States) or in air freight with Air France. The group’s financial health could revive the debate on superprofits, especially since it benefits from a favorable tax regime. The CMA paid 2% tax in France on its results in 2021. The shipowner had made a gesture by lowering its iron rates, but does not wish to be taxed more. The company claims to inject 90% of its profits back into the business and to have paid 700 million euros to its employees in the form of bonuses and salary increases.
