China: the success of synthetic diamonds
China: the success of synthetic diamonds – (France 2)
Although diamonds are very expensive, it is now possible to switch to their synthetic version, which is much less expensive. Global sales of synthetic diamonds have increased twelvefold in six years, and 95% of these diamonds are produced in China.
Some diamonds do not come out of the depths of the earth, but have grown in the laboratory. These are synthetic diamonds. A jewelry store in Shanghai (China) has made it its specialty. The only difference between synthetic diamonds and their natural version is the price. Wang Hua, founder of Univv Bijouterie, indicates that a ring with a synthetic diamond costs around 2,500 euros. “For a natural diamond of the same size and quality, it would cost up to 25,000 euros, or ten times more expensive”he specifies.
One in five diamonds sold comes from a laboratory
Today, China is at the forefront in this area. It produces 95% of the world’s cultured diamonds. Diamonds are made in factories, using incubators. Underground, diamonds take millions of years to form. For the synthetic version, around twenty days is enough. Today in the world, nearly one in five diamonds sold comes from a laboratory. Global sales have increased twelvefold in six years.
