Spain is the breeding ground for orange cultivation, which accounts for 52% of the country’s harvests. To face stiff competition, some are going organic.

In Andalusia (Spain), some producers have started harvesting organically, in order to be able to maintain agricultural activity. On an organic farm run by two brothers, around 110 tonnes of organic oranges are harvested each year, thanks to very fertile soil and optimal climatic conditions. “Here, the thermal contrast between winter and summer is very strong (…) It is [c]e contrast of temperatures which makes it ripen very well, and gives an intense aroma and flavor “, explains Juan Salamanca Ocana, one of the farmers.

The oranges arrive at an agricultural cooperative. Faced with the apparent success of organic, the structure has created a new line which is exclusively dedicated to it. “We export about 300 tonnes of oranges per day“, says Antonio Carmona, manager of Sunaran Sat Cooperative Agricole.
