Spotlight of Tom McCarthy, in 2015, brilliantly highlighted the work of journalists from Boston Globe to denounce the pedophile scourge in the American Catholic Church. With Sound of Freedom, which comes out Wednesday, November 15, Mexican director Alejandro Monteverde tackles its international and mafia dimension. But for what truth?
The film is said to be the retelling of a true story. But the veracity of this case of global child trafficking is called into question in the United States. A conspiracy theoryelayed by the QAnon movement would serve as a basis for the scenario: it is the famous affair of adrenochrome, a drug derived from the blood of children which would fuel the world elites with these regenerative virtues.
Many American media are concerned about the main actor’s links with the QAnon movement. Producer Eduardo Verástegui is a staunch campaigner for anti-abortion laws. Beyond the thriller, this is the vocation of the message of Sound of Freedom who questions.
Disturbing plans
Former American federal agent, Tim Ballard embarks on a rescue operation at the risk of his life, to free hundreds of children imprisoned by sex traffickers around the world. On this heroic canvas, Alejandro Monteverde films a thriller using action film codes to tackle a serious subject. He is unfortunately served by Jim Caviezel who seems more to wonder what he is doing there than to have deep convictions.
In his third film, Alejandro Monteverde tackles the genre film, after a romance and a family film. Conducted like a thriller, Sound of Freedom shows showmanship qualities in action. The production never falls into voyeurism, but generates disturbing or disturbing shots, like that of a child sitting on the edge of a hotel bed, or under the sheets, when a man arrives undressing.
Action dominates the subject. Alejandro Monteverde could have cut down on the 2h11 of the film which lists the barriers that Tim Ballard faces, and the threats that weigh on him, from the slums to the upscale neighborhoods. In tune with the film, Jim Caviezel plays more action than psychological torture, more physical than mental.
