Storks have started to return to Bas-Rhin. The village of Neuwiller-lès-Saverne has the largest number of white storks in Alsace in relation to the number of inhabitants.

In Neuwiller-lès-Saverne (Bas-Rhin), storks fight to obtain the best nests. Like Alsace, the population of white storks increases from year to year in the village. More than 40 nests have been identified in the village. The municipality is the most populated by the species in relation to its population. Enough to delight the 1,100 inhabitants. “The stork is still beautiful with its long red legs. There is an elegance to this bird”slips a resident.

Highly sought-after nests

But this little white stork paradise is filling up quickly. “The population of storks is tending to increase. Places are rare and expensive. To find a new nesting site, you have to look”, assures Yves Muller, president of the League for the Protection of Birds in Alsace. The public can even follow the daily lives of the storks thanks to cameras positioned at the nests.
