the State wants French manufacturers to accelerate the pace

The Minister of Industry and Energy, Roland Lescure, is asking manufacturers to produce more cars intended for this device. This system has already “exceeded its initial objectives” for this year, specifies the Élysée. It will resume at the end of 2024 for the year 2025.

Government social leasing offers a long-term rental of electric cars to low-income motorists. (PENNANT FRANCK / MAXPPP)

In January, more than 90,000 people applied to benefit from an electric car for less than 100 euros per month for city cars, and 150 euros for family cars, excluding insurance and maintenance. Launched in December, this rental system with option to purchase is currently reserved for the most modest French people and long-distance riders. However, the device is meeting strong demand and the supply is not keeping up. There are not enough vehicles available, hence the appeal launched on Sunday February 11 on France 3 by the minister now in charge of the Ecological Transition, Roland Lescure. The State also decided, Monday February 12, to put an end to the 2024 edition of this system, after having “exceeds” its initial objectives for this year, according to the Élysée. The operation will restart at the end of 2024 for the year 2025,

Is the State ready to finance 50,000 electric cars through social leasing instead of the 25,000 initially planned? Asked about the question, the minister responded positively, provided that the pace follows at the level of French producers, because the objective is not to electrify the French fleet with cars manufactured in China. Of course, everything cannot be done with a snap of the fingers and Roland Lescure recognizes that we will have to wait a little, but the will is there.

Energetic transition

This pressure is mounting in the context of the future law on energy sovereignty that the government is currently refining. A text intended to set the course for France to move away from fossil fuels as well as the means to achieve this. This should result in a law within the year.

For Roland Lescure, the debate must take place both with the associations concerned and parliamentarians. If necessary, “we will find a political agreement”, he specifies. But we must also and above all convince the French that our industrial and energy sovereignty is possible. Hence this pressure is particularly placed on car manufacturers to produce even more electric vehicles eligible for social leasing. Except that the time of politics is not that of the economy since the first is short term while the second is long term.
