They are added to an already long list. The state of natural disaster has been recognized for 99 additional French municipalities in 31 departments, after the droughts occurring during the year 2022, according to a decree published Wednesday December 27 in the Official Journal.

The state of natural disaster was declared after “differential land movements following drought and soil rehydration”, according to the text of the decree taken on December 19. Among the departments most affected, we find for example Drôme, Jura, Lot, Nord or Haute-Savoie.

Residents of the municipalities concerned can make requests for compensation in the event of a disaster occurring over a precise period, specific to each municipality and specified in the decree. The affected persons have a period of thirty days from the date of publication of the decree to contact their insurance companies, in order to benefit from the compensation scheme.

Several hundred municipalities have already been recognized as being in a state of natural disaster after the droughts of 2022. The government decided at the beginning of 2023 to relax the conditions for recognition of the state of natural disaster. The cost of the drought on individual homes for insurers was around 2.5 billion euros last year, according to the federation of insurers France Assureurs in September.
