Thousands of migrants are still hostages, Monday, November 15, in the standoff between Europe and Belarus. While at least ten deaths are already to be deplored, Poland announced the construction of a wall as early as next month.
Blocked by an imposing deployment of Polish forces at the border, 2,000 to 3,000 migrants are condemned to remain on Belarusian soil, a few meters from Europe. In recent days, makeshift camps have been set up along the barbed wire. The living conditions there are terrible, especially for families with young children. “The children are very, very cold, there is no food or water”, one of them confides. Many come from Kurdistan or Syria, attracted by Belarus’ promise to let them pass to Europe. “We are actively working to convince these people to go home, but no one wants to go back”, for his part declared Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
For the European Union, this migration war was created from scratch. It has already caused a dozen deaths. “We think we’ll be staying here month to month all winter. The situation is not going to be resolved quickly “, says Agata Kolodziej, long Salvation Foundation. Europe is due to announce new sanctions soon. In the meantime, airlines have engaged to no longer transport migrants to Belarus and Poland confirmed the construction of a wall at its eastern border.
