The St. Lawrence String Quartet in mourning

Canada’s most internationally renowned string quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet announced the passing of Geoff Nuttall on Wednesday. The 1st violin of the Quartet died at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.

Nuttall had founded the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) in Toronto in 1989. He had also been a professor at the famous Stanford University since 1998, where, with his colleagues Owen Dalby, Lesley Robertson and Christopher Costanza, the SLSQ was an ensemble in residence.

The SLSQ has made a name for itself, notably through recordings for EMI, for the eclecticism of its repertoire. One of his most famous couple recordings The Dreams And Prayers Of Isaac The Blind and Yiddishbbuk Argentinian Osvaldo Golijov.

Geoff Nuttall was married with two children. The SLSQ’s last concert with him took place on July 11 at the Grand Teton Festival. Stanford University has set up a “Geoff Nuttall Memorial Fund”.
