Canada’s most internationally renowned string quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet announced the passing of Geoff Nuttall on Wednesday. The first violin of the group died at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.
Nuttall had founded the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) in Toronto in 1989. He had also been a professor at the famous Stanford University since 1998, where the SLSQ, formed by Nuttall and his colleagues Owen Dalby, Lesley Robertson and Christopher Costanza, was an ensemble in residence.
The SLSQ has made a name for itself, notably through recordings for EMI, for the eclecticism of its repertoire. One of his most famous couple recordings The Dreams And Prayers Of Isaac The Blind and Yiddishbbukby Argentinian Osvaldo Golijov.
Geoff Nuttall was married with two children. The last SLSQ concert in which he participated took place on July 11 at the Grand Teton Festival. Stanford University has established the Geoff Nuttall Memorial Fund.
