It was the work of the future tramway that led to the evacuation of the squat on rue Cazemajou in Marseille in the 15th arrondissement on Monday. Dozens of Roma families had previously been living in appalling conditions and in misery for more than four years. Men, women and children: 170 in total. The evacuation organized this Monday by the prefecture went “smoothly” specify the state services. The occupation of this site had become incompatible with the realization of the development works of the tramway which will serve the northern districts of the city, a priority project of the mobility component of the “Marseille en Grand” plan, specifies the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône.
Some families, informed several days ago of the need to leave the premises had taken the initiative and had already evacuated these disused buildings, finally what is left of them. Others waited for the operation set up by the prefecture. Thus 41 people have been staying at the hotel since Monday.. The prefecture specifies that at the request of the State, the households located in Cazemajou were the subject of specific support by associative actors (access to the right, to housing, to care, to schooling, professional integration …) which will be maintained after the evacuation in order to promote their social integration.
Create “integration villages”
The wish of the prefecture today is to offer these families more sustainable and above all more dignified accommodation solutions. The idea of creating “integration villages” is mentioned.
We should have integration villages which would make it possible to accommodate families and which, over a longer period, would allow them to prepare for housing. In Marseille it does not exist. It is absolutely necessary that we initiate a process with communities and associations – Laurent Carrié, delegate prefect for equal opportunities
