All this week, the 13 Hours newspaper takes you to exceptional places, which have served as life-size sets for legendary films. Monday February 13, it is a classic of cinema which is put forward: “Out of Africa”, released in 1985, a romantic drama in the splendid wild spaces of Kenya.
Suspended 300 meters in the air, tourists contemplate one of the most exceptional settings in the world, the immense savannah of the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya. Hundreds of waking wild animals stand just below them, scurrying around in search of breakfast. “It’s magic here, you will never have such a perspective from the ground”, says the guide. It was in this unique setting that in 1985, the American director Sydney Pollack shot his famous adventure film, Out of Africa.
Same sensations as in fiction
It is a romantic drama entirely filmed in Kenya and played on screen by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Today, hot air balloons have replaced the airplane in the film, but for French and Scottish tourists, the sensations are the same as in the fiction. In the film, after the plane ride, the heroes treat themselves to a romantic picnic-style breakfast, right in the heart of the savannah. Even today, many tourists reproduce the scene. Iconic, Out of Africa marked several generations and paved the way for modern safaris.
