A speleologist who was supervising a school outing died, Thursday, May 5, in Isère. The schoolchildren and accompanying persons were surprised by the sudden rise in water. Many questions remain unanswered.
The accident took place in a massif near Grenoble. Thursday, May 5, 5th graders were trapped by the rising waters in the Sassenage tanks. They were evacuated, but the tragedy led to the death of a speleologist. Back at college this morning, they are still in shock. A schoolboy says, with his comrades, “to have been extremely scared. We were a little shocked, all shocked”. On Thursday, the emergency services tried to save three attendants. Among them, the professional speleologist could not be saved in time. The victim, a 55-year-old mother, allegedly sacrificed her life to save a child.
In 2002, in this same cave, college students were stuck overnight. No casualties were reported. The mayor of Sassenage says that since this incident, protections have been put in place. The investigation opened following the tragedy on Thursday should make it possible to determine the responsibilities of each.
