In Iceland, a new volcanic eruption is underway on Thursday February 8. The fissure is three kilometers long and evacuations have taken place.

Even from a distance from the eruption, the spectacle is striking. Lava emerges from a three-kilometre-long fissure and pours all around. At 6 a.m. on Thursday February 8, webcams captured the start of the eruption, which suddenly lit up the Icelandic night, a few minutes after an earthquake. The helicopter coast guard captured a scene that has become routine over the past two months. In the Grindavík area (Iceland)located thirty kilometers from the capital Reykjavik, this is the third eruption since December 18.

Residents were evacuated

The 4,000 residents of the nearby town were evacuated, but it would not be threatened, according to the authorities. “There were a few tourists at the Blue Lagoon spa. Everyone was evacuated within 30 minutes”, raises the local police chief. Daybreak revealed a transformed landscape, between snow and fire, where the authorities are working to strengthen the dams and contain the lava, which has already spread to a road. The peninsula, which was spared from eruptions for eight centuries, has seen its volcanic activity resume in the last three years.
