The almond trees of Mittelwihr, at a place called Mandelberg (Haut-Rhin), have been in flower since the end of February. Planted more than a hundred years ago for some, they constitute a unique heritage in Alsace.
Almond blossoms are the beauty of the Mittelwihr hill, at a place called Mandelberg (Haut-Rhin). Heralding the start of spring, the little white flowers bloomed at the end of February, a little earlier than in 2023. Many curious people come to enjoy this magnificent ephemeral spectacle. “It’s the first time we’ve seen them, we find them so beautiful with this pink color. It’s incredible!”, confides a young girl. A tasting workshop is even offered to passers-by.
“A heritage to be preserved”
Around twenty Alsatian wine growers share this unique terroir, the only one in Alsace where you can find this variety of trees. Some almond trees were planted more than a hundred years ago. From generation to generation, the story continues. “It is a heritage to be maintained and preserved”, assures Thibault Specht, winegrower in Mittelwihr. The origin of these almond trees dates back several thousand years. According to legend, bags of almond seeds were found by peasants, left intentionally by Charlemagne.
