Better late than never. The Spanish Football League filed a complaint on Tuesday February 6 after racist insults targeted Vinicius, the Brazilian striker for Real Madrid, during a championship match played on the Getafe pitch on Thursday February 1. The body requested the prosecution for the facts reported in a report sent after each match to the Spanish Federation (RFEF) and the Anti-Violence Commission.
La Liga says it detected among the crowd present in the stadium in the Madrid suburbs “intolerant songs”such as “son of a bitch” And “Vinicius, monkey”, as the Real Madrid bus arrived at the venue. Other insults against Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos were also noted.
Vinicius, figure in the fight against racism
Should we see this as a salutary awareness? Unfortunately, this is not the first time that racism in Spanish football has been denounced. In May 2023, Vinicius pointed the finger at a man who called him a “monkey” at Mestalla, Valencia’s stadium. He was expelled following an altercation with an opponent. Real Madrid filed a complaint the next day.
“You are not alone, we are with you and we support you”, reacted Kylian Mbappé on Instagram. Other big names in football, like Neymar, Paul Pogba or Rio Ferdinand, had also supported the Brazilian international, who has become a figure in the fight against racist abuses in sport.
Since arriving in the Spanish league in 2018, Vinicius has been repeatedly targeted with abusive words and behavior. This season is the third time that the striker has been attacked for his skin color, in or around a stadium, after similar incidents in Seville and Barcelona.
