The south and center of the province will receive significant amounts of rain as of Sunday

The south and center of the province will again be exposed to significant amounts of rain on Sunday, precipitation which, in the midst of the spring flood, is “not welcome”, according to Environment Canada.

Barely out of the floods that occurred at the start of the week after several days of rain, the large regions of Quebec and Montreal will still be under surveillance, since this precipitation could still cause the rivers and the river to come out of their beds.

According to Jean-Philippe Bégin, meteorologist for Environment Canada (EC), 20 to 40 millimeters of rain are expected for the two major regions.

“It is certain that this rain is not welcome at all”, underlines Mr. Bégin, evoking cautiously the situation of the rivers in full spring flood.

According to the Public Security website, several regions near Montreal are currently at the threshold of minor flooding. Lanaudière is an exception to the rule: it displays an average flood threshold. The greater Quebec City region is, for its part, at the surveillance threshold. Upcoming rainfall could potentially make the situation worse.

“It is in the night from Saturday to Sunday that the precipitation will settle in southern Quebec in general. Sunday morning, the precipitation will make its way to Mauricie, while for the region of Quebec and Chaudière-Appalaches, it is more towards the end of the afternoon of Sunday that the rain will settle. continues the meteorologist.

The system will spin over eastern Quebec and “act like a wall” preventing its movement, which will affect the regions of Quebec and Montreal until Tuesday. Some regions could receive more than 40 millimeters of rain.

“That’s not good news, warns Mr. Bégin. Unfortunately, on a band north of the river, we could have 40 to 60 millimeters of rain, more precisely in the Laurentians, Lanaudière, Mauricie, and this, possibly to the gates of Quebec.

High level of preparation

Civil Security spokesman Joshua Ménard-Suarez says he is not “overly” worried about the upcoming rainfall. However, the level of preparation remains high, as at the start of the week.

“With the rain that we are expecting, for a good part of the rivers, we will return to the levels of the beginning of the week, perhaps a little to exceed them, but we do not expect dramatic increases”, he observes.

The Outaouais, Laurentides and Lanaudière regions will be monitored more closely, due to the current state of water levels.

In the Capitale-Nationale, it is the Saint-Charles and Huron rivers that will be mainly under the magnifying glass of the various authorities.
