Police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) were called to the detention facility around 5:30 p.m. for a fight between two inmates.

One of them, Jason Gagné, was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

However, the nature of the injuries is not known.

Long sentence in penitentiary

Gagné was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2017 for charges of breaking and entering, robbery, forcible confinement and possession of weapons.

He was subsequently convicted in 2018 of orchestrating drug trafficking from his cell, which earned him an additional four years behind bars.

The 35-year-old is the son of Sylvain “Shawny” Gagné, a founding member of the Quebec chapter of the Hells Angels, according to a judgment rendered in 2010, after his arrest in the mega-police operation SharQc.

Last Wednesday’s altercation was not the first to occur between Gagne and fellow inmates.

In August 2020, he was allegedly assaulted by several prisoners at the Donnacona establishment, according to a court decision consulted by The newspaper.

Charge

Another inmate at the Cowansville facility, Lee Kikis Papatie, has been charged with manslaughter, the SQ confirmed. He appeared Thursday at the Granby courthouse.

Papatie, 21, has been behind bars since last June for a multitude of crimes, including breaking and entering, mischief, carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of drugs.

“As is always the case when an inmate dies, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances of the incident,” CSC said in a statement.
