Days pass and look alike for firefighters in Gironde. For the past week, firefighters have been mobilized 24 hours a day and are stepping up their efforts to try to put an end to the progression of the fires. They have to constantly drown the vegetation, to prevent a spark from turning into a blaze.
“We proceed to the wetting of all the small recoveries to prevent the fire from spreading to the houses”, explains Captain Essouala, from the Channel Fire and Rescue Service. “It’s very, very extensive, we water to the right, to the left, but we’ll get there”, tries to reassure his colleague Laurent Varin, chief warrant officer.
In a spirit of mutual aid, some residents, equipped with their bucket of water or their garden hose, go to the site to try to support them. “They are exhausted, they have been fighting this fire for a long time. The least you can do is help them and thank them”, explains one of them.
