This decision follows in particular the refusal of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his inner circle to describe Hamas as “terrorist”, after the bloody attack against Israel.

If “Jean-Luc Mélenchon was a unifying factor”he is “today become an obstacle”. THE Socialist Party has voted, on the night of Tuesday October 17 to Wednesday October 18, a “moratorium” on his participation in the work of the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes). Meeting for six hours, the national council of PS made this decision with 54.15% of the votes.

The text also denounces “permanent conflict” from the leader of La France insoumise “which prohibits any enlargement”. “The current framework of the gathering of the left has shown its limits in terms of democratic functioning and collective working method”, justifies the party in a press release. This decision follows the refusal of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his inner circle to characterize Hamas as “terrorist”after the bloody attack on Israel.

In his speech to the socialists, the boss of the PS, Olivier Faure, underlined “the need for a radical change in the way of conceiving the union”. “We did not sign up for brothelization. We are here to govern and transform,” he asserted, while claiming to remain “a supporter of the union”.

“Olivier Faure breaks the Nupes”

“Olivier Faure breaks up the Nupes”. With this tweet in the form of an epitaph, Jean-Luc Mélenchon had formalized in the morning the end of Nupes, denouncing a divorce “for personal fact about me regarding Israel (and) Palestine”.

The coalition has been in trouble for a long time. The hope raised in June 2022 was indeed put to the test by the domestic violence of Adrien Quatennens, the strategy at the time of the pension reform, the war in Ukraine or the urban riots. The Communist Party has already taken a step towards exit on Sunday by voting on a resolution which notes the “impasse” of the Nupes and demanding “a new type of union”.
