This opens a new era, after 16 years of Angela Merkel. The German Social Democrats, the Greens and the Liberals reached a government agreement on Wednesday 24 November to form a coalition that will come to power, according to the contract between the three parties. Almost two months after the federal elections marked by a historic debacle for the conservative camp of the chancellor, the social democrat Olaf Scholz will enter the chancellery, in an unprecedented alliance with the Greens and the liberal party of the FDP. The latter obtained the Ministry of Finance. The ecologists will inherit, them, five ministries including that of Foreign Affairs and a “super-ministry” regrouping the Economy and the Climate protection.

The new coalition announced several measures. Among them, she wants to legalize cannabis, the sale of which in “approved stores” will be reserved “to adults”. The SPD, the Greens and the Liberals also want to advance the exit from coal. “The ideal would be to achieve this by 2030”, they state in their contract, stressing that “this requires the massive development of renewable energies” and involves “the construction of modern gas-fired power stations in order to meet the growing needs for electricity and energy over the coming years at competitive prices”. The new government coalition also intends to return “in 2023” to the rules of budgetary rigor, including the constitutional brake on debt, according to the agreement between the parties presented on Wednesday.
