Volodymyr Zelensky’s last words on Monday March 11 were intended to be optimistic : “Russia’s advance has been stopped”he assures. The Ukrainian president even speaks of a situation “much better on the front than during the last three months”. While Emmanuel Macron does not rule out sending troops to Ukraine and the United States has released new military aid, what is the situation on the different fronts?
The Russians remain on the offensive. They launch new attacks every day on the Ukrainian lines in the south, in the Robotyne sector and then also in the east, in several hot spots in Donbass. After the fall of Avdiivka last month, Ukrainians feared a rapid advance of Moscow’s tanks to the west. Finally, it seems to slow down.
Russian attacks continue
Slowing down Russia is the whole challenge of the major project launched by Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president announced the construction of 2,000 kilometers of anti-tank fortifications along the front to be able to face a possible Russian offensive. The work is progressing quickly, he assures, but this also confirms that the Ukrainian army remains, for the moment, in a defensive logic. For it, it is, above all, about preserving its territory rather than considering a counter-offensive.
On the maritime side, at the end of January, there was the spectacular destruction of a Russian anti-missile corvette in the Black Sea. Other attacks over the past two years have also considerably weakened the ability of Moscow’s ships to fire cruise missiles from the Black Sea onto Ukrainian soil.
And then in the air, the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense is causing increasingly significant damage to the Russian aviation, while waiting for deliveries of F16 planes, they are hoped for by the summer.
Incursions into Russia
Attempted incursions by Russian fighters, dissidents supported by kyiv, took place in Russia on Tuesday. The latter say they want to rid their country of Vladimir Putin. Three days before the Russian presidential election, Moscow says these attacks have been repelled. The day before, Ukrainian drones fell in Russia, at least five border regions were attacked, and two Russian fuel depots were damaged.
